School

Staring out the window, the pull down
blind moves forward, backwards,
creating the illusion for a moment
that the world is closing from inside
a giant eye. From my window I see others
and like many eyes the windows watch each other
looking for a hundred years from their red brick
faces facing one another in this school that's
marked for closure. Whole lives were learned here,
brains unwound and rewoven. The floors so thickly
lacquered you can see through filthy layers years
of filth before. Don't let it eat you, those years
of filth that lie behind you.
